Chris and Ava Kennedy have been devoted volunteers in Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital’s “Caring Canines” therapy dog program for more than two decades.  Cassi, their Bernese Mountain dog, passed away in February 2024 at the age of 9 after having served most of her life in the program alongside Chris and Ava.

 

Recently, Community West Foundation and Fairview Hospital honored Chris and Ava by placing Cassi’s name on the “Paws for Care” memorial plaque at the hospital.  Cassie was the sixth Bernese Mountain dog to serve with the Kennedy’s in the Caring Canines program, and she now joins her “siblings” North, Rosie, Tally, Rain and Aquilo on the memorial plaque.  Chris and Ava attended the occasion with Fini, their 2-year-old Bernese Mountain dog who also serves with them in the program. Cassi held a special place in the hearts of many. Her gentle nature and affection endeared her to all she encountered.  Cassi helped Fini learn how to be a wonderful Caring Canine!

 

Chris and Ava continue their commitment to bringing comfort and healing to those in need.   Alongside their faithful companion, Fini, they spread smiles and warmth throughout the hospital. Their presence not only brightens the days of patients, but also uplifts the spirits of caregivers, too. Should you happen upon Fini, Chris and Ava during your visit to Fairview Hospital, be sure to extend a warm greeting.  Their company embodies a sense of hope and kindness, bringing comfort and smiles to all they meet along the way.

 

Caring Canines are registered therapy dogs who visit Fairview Hospital accompanied by their handlers, to bring companionship and comfort to patients and staff.  Fairview Hospital has had their Therapy Dog program for 29 years.
