Community West Foundation is proud to recognize Oberlin Community Services (OCS) as the recipient of the 2026 David and Martha Hessler Illuminating Hope Award, honoring the organization’s longstanding commitment to helping individuals and families overcome barriers, access essential resources, and build brighter futures.
The award was presented during Community West Foundation’s Community Update event before an audience of more than 200 community leaders, donors, nonprofit partners, healthcare professionals, and stakeholders. OCS Executive Director, Margie Flood, and members of the organization’s team accepted the honor on behalf of the agency.
Named for longtime Community West Foundation supporters and philanthropists David and Martha Hessler, the Illuminating Hope Award recognizes a nonprofit organization that exemplifies compassion, service, dignity, and a deep commitment to strengthening the community. The award includes a $10,000 unrestricted grant and a replica of Canadian sculptor Timothy Schmalz’s Homeless Jesus sculpture.
For decades, Oberlin Community Services has served as a vital resource for residents across southern Lorain County. The organization provides food assistance, emergency financial support, educational opportunities, holiday assistance programs, and connections to critical community resources for individuals and families facing economic hardship. Through its food pantry, seasonal programs, and client support services, OCS helps ensure that vulnerable neighbors have access to the necessities they need to thrive.
Community West Foundation selected OCS for its dedication to meeting both immediate and long-term community needs. Whether providing emergency assistance to families in crisis, helping residents maintain stable housing and utilities, or creating opportunities for children and families during the holiday season, the organization consistently demonstrates the values at the heart of the Illuminating Hope Award.
During the award presentation, Community West Foundation President and CEO Marty Uhle noted that Oberlin Community Services embodies the spirit of hope, compassion, and service that the award was created to celebrate. The organization’s work reflects the Foundation’s mission to advance health and well-being, particularly for those facing the greatest challenges.
