Lisa Bolognia and her golden retriever, Josie, are a beloved therapy dog team with Caring Canines, brightening the lives of patients at Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital since 2017. Their journey began when Josie was just 16 weeks old, as Lisa pursued a dream of raising a well-behaved, happy dog. With countless hours of training—from basic obedience to therapy dog testing and registration—their bond grew stronger, paving the way for Josie to become a remarkable therapy dog.
Now nine years old, Josie is a gentle and loving presence, adored by patients and caregivers alike. Her favorite hospital visits include the high-risk pregnancy unit, pediatrics, and the pediatric ER, where her warm demeanor brings comfort and smiles. Outside of volunteering, Josie is a true golden retriever at heart, loving nothing more than swimming, playing with her siblings (Bo, an eight-year-old golden retriever rescue, and Charley, a one-year-old tuxedo cat rescue), and frolicking in the snow.
Lisa’s passion for therapy work stems from her love of golden retrievers, a breed she has cherished for over 25 years, and her desire to give back to the community. Inspired by her mother, who uses a wheelchair, Lisa was committed to training Josie to provide the best support possible.
Together, Lisa and Josie embody the spirit of Caring Canines, proving that the bond between humans and animals can truly make a difference. Whether they’re offering a comforting paw or a wagging tail, this dynamic duo continues to spread joy and healing wherever they go.
