Helping Cleveland's Homeless Families
Family Promise is the major agency in our area that provides services to keep homeless families together. In 2012 our area had 588 homeless families, including 1,144 children - an increase of 21% over 2011. Many of the families are comprised of single parent or single grandparent and children. Last year, Family Promise was able to serve 118 of these homeless families by providing emergency housing in area churches – a network of nearly 80 host and support congregations throughout our area.
The average stay of the families is 46 days. The agency transports children to the schools in which they are currently enrolled, causing less trauma to the children. The program has a success rate of 86% in keeping the families intact and placing them in permanent housing, as well as helping parents find full or part time employment.
Our third year of grant funding of $25,000 will be used for the costs of housing and feeding families, particularly at the Family Center located at Pilgrim United Church of Christ.
