Dr. Joyesh Raj
Every once in a while, you encounter a person who you know is destined for greatness. Dr. Joyesh Raj is that kind of person. A skilled surgeon, author, leader, lecturer, philanthropist. These roles all describe the life and work of Dr. Joyesh Raj. His desire to help others shines through not only in his practice of medicine, but through his giving heart. It is this desire that will ensure success in all his endeavors.
Dr. Raj graduated with honors in Economics and Biology from The University of Chicago and earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati. His post-graduate years in general surgery residency were at Fairview Hospital and were followed by a plastic surgery residency at the University of Colorado. Blending study and service while on staff at Denver Children’s Hospital, Dr. Raj encountered many children suffering with congenital deformities. This prompted him to found the Berkshire Advisory Resource Children’s Foundation (BAR) to raise funds for reconstructive surgical care for those who cannot afford treatment.
He found more opportunities to do good across the globe as he joined other volunteers on a medical mission to Mexico through LIGA International, the Flying Doctors of Mercy. Dr. Raj is also the co-founder of the Sushruta Society of Plastic Surgery, a national coalition of Indian plastic surgeons who are committed to providing care to people in need in rural villages in India.
Even with his busy practice and his appointment of Chief of Plastic Surgery at Fairview Hospital, Dr. Raj still finds time to work on behalf of the underserved at North Coast Health Ministry, treating patients with the utmost humanity and devotion.
As a generous community patron, Dr. Raj opened a Donor Advised Fund in 2007 at the Community West Foundation to enhance the power of philanthropy. The impact of Dr. Raj’s giving is felt locally with significant gifts through his Fund to Fairview Hospital’s Moll Cancer Center, the Breast Health Center, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the United Cerebral Palsy Association, the American Association of Indian Plastic Surgeons and many other health agencies.
He has supported his alma maters – Lake Ridge Academy, The University of Chicago, and the University of Cincinnati – demonstrating how any graduate can repay the gift of education.
Through his immense philanthropic support he is giving hope and love to those who need it most. His legacy of putting others first is Illuminating Hope in our community.
